  • An Interview with the All-Female Film Crew of The Empowerment Project

An Interview with the All-Female Film Crew of The Empowerment Project

Director Sarah Moshman and Co-Producer Ashley Hammen dish on the making of the documentary, The Empowerment Project.

Last month Catherine and I had the pleasure of attending a screening of the female driven documentary, The Empowerment Project: Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things. The film seeks to answer the time-tested question, “What would you do if you weren’t afraid to fail?”. For Sarah Moshman and her crew of female filmmakers, the answer was easy. It was the creation of this project.

Over the course of 30 days and 7,000 miles, these women hit the road to interview 17 women in leadership. From ballerinas to brew masters, they interviewed women in  industries as varied as they come, all the while negating stereotypes of what it means to be a women in charge.

As far as we think we’ve come, the truth is that we still have a long way to go to accepting powerful women as the norm. The Empowerment Project seeks to see that change by sparking conversation about what it means to be a successful woman and what it takes to join the ranks. Needless to say, we wanted in on the conversation.

For the latest installment in our Brunches with the Best series, I sat down with Sarah Moshman the film’s director and Ashley Hammen one of the film’s co-producers to find out more about the making of the film, what they hope to see it accomplish, and the advice they’d offer to our Single Girls.

  • The Songstress| An Interview with Singer/ Songwriter Missy Modell

The Songstress| An Interview with Singer/ Songwriter Missy Modell

Finding Your Beat with Singer/Songwriter Missy Modell

In this episode of Toast Meets Jam I caught up with singer/songwriter Missy Modell at one of our favorite LA hot spots- Axe. As we dug into our very Venice Basic Bowls, she caught me up on her pursuit of a career in the music industry.

At the age of 24 Missy had already established herself as a singer on the rise. Self described as the “Rihanna to an Eminem soundtrack” she had found her beat touring college campuses with other up and coming artists. Fast forward a few years and this leading lading has declared it time to pave a new path–this time one that provides a true reflection of her unabashed, fun, beautiful self.

She talks with me about her  musical journey, the process of self discovery, and why it’s time for her to take center-stage.

The idea behind Inspire Girls To is that if a girl saw reflections of herself in women leaders, pioneers, and change-makers, perhaps she would find the confidence within herself and think, “If they could do it, I can too.”

Welcome back to Single Girl Brunches with the Best—a series of conversations with friends and leading ladies who are fierce, fearless and inspirational.

Karina Capulong and I met in ballet school as adolescents. Our families became friends over the years, and I got to know Karina even better when we went to the same high school. We participated in the same performing arts activities, and something I always admired about Karina was her ability to lead by example. She was never bossy and yet she possessed the qualities of a good leader. She radiated a calming and encouraging energy that put those around her at ease. I came across her project through a couple mutual friends who were involved. Inspire Girls To (or iG2) empowers girls by educating them about influential women who have paved the way for more girls and women to lead and succeed in their own special ways. As we close out Women’s History Month, I thought it perfect timing to reflect on how we can learn from the example of great women in history and continue to propel that inspiration into the rest of the year.

Karina holds a BS in Community & Regional Development with a minor in Sociology from UC Davis and a Masters in Public Administration with honors from San Francisco State University and currently works at Genentech. In her own words, “my vision for Inspire Girls To is to create a community of girls who believe in themselves, support one another, and want to lead and do good in the world. Essentially, by empowering girls now, I see a world where more women are confident, compassionate, and leading the pack.”

The Single Diaries brunches with yoga teacher Megan D’Amico.

    photo 2

Megan D’Amico graduated magna cum laude from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in Communication Studies. We met by chance when she was assigned to be the fourth roommate in our dorm suite, proof that everything happens for a reason. She later became my big sis in our sorority, influenced my decision to stay in L.A. after college, and continues to inspire me in so many ways. This past summer, I had the privilege of witnessing the start of a new chapter in her life: Megan’s graduation day to become a certified Kundalini yoga instructor—an unexpectedly emotional day for me.

In an experience as spiritual as yoga, your teacher’s energy guides the class more than anything else. Her classes are always a perfect start to the week: stimulating, motivating, and thoughtful. Megan shares her journey, her philosophy, and the lessons she learned to get to where she is.

  • The Single Diaries Brunches With PR Diva Jamie Madrid

    Jamie-Madrid_2013

Jamie Madrid-Mehta moved to L.A. after college (a Journalism and Marketing Communications major) and dove head first into Public Relations. Years later, she took the plunge and started her eponymous firm Jamie Madrid Consulting. Representing the fashion, beauty, accessory, restaurant and lifestyle industries through her array of clients, Jamie has been called a “PR Diva with impeccable taste and truly great connections.” This mid-twenties Midwesterner is the antithesis of generation Y: a self-made go-getter who isn’t afraid of risk or commitment. With the brains to back it up, she’s a recipe for success.

I met Jamie a few years ago through a friend; we had a breakthrough conversation at that friend’s tea during which Jamie first told me about her plans to launch her company, and we have stayed in touch since. One Sunday we met at Sunny Spot, my favorite neighborhood haunt for bottomless brunch libations. In between rounds of mimosas, Jamie reflected on her experience thus far.
