Top 10 activities in San Francisco to take advantage of Indian Summer

    Indian Summer San Francisco

While the rest of the country is storing their swimsuits and shorts, Northern California experiences a spurt of warmer days in September and October. (Though I must admit the east side of San Francisco has been enjoying many a sunny day since I moved back.) We may not have the plethora of pool parties that SoCal has, but there are many ways to take advantage of the unparalleled views and fresh air. Here are 10 on my list. (more…)

Surprise! Those Home Workout DVDs Do Work (ft. P90)

An Experiment in Fitness and Nutrition with P90P90

Ermahgawd I’m a before and after photo. (Pause for a moment of disbelief).

When I moved to LA the most valuable thing I packed was an open mind.  I told myself I’d be up for whatever experiences were thrown my way. Auditioning for a reality TV show– check! Dancing in the desert at a musical festival– check! Eating raw food and green juice– check, check! Testing out a new home workout program….hold up. Let’s say I didn’t see that one coming.

While there were many things I anticipated getting the chance to do, becoming a before and after “model” was not one.  Yet, when the opportunity presented itself, I dove in and stayed true to my commitment to embrace the unexpected. This leads us to the aforementioned picture. A side-by-side comparison of my flawed imperfect normal self put on display next to a ‘New and Improved!’ version.

Normally sharing these photos would fall outside of the sphere of things I’m willing to do.  Appearing on reality TV fully clothed is one thing. Sharing half-naked pictures of myself a whole other and exponentially frightening endeavor (IMOP). Particularly frightening when one of those photos makes me look like I’ve smoked a pipe of opium and eaten a wedding cake while hibernating in a remote arctic cave. It’s not exactly the selfie I want on display for all the world to see.

One of the things The Single Diaries has taught me, however, is not to let fear get in the way of opportunity. When these photos were shared with me, I knew there was an opportunity to share the story behind them with you. So what exactly is that story? How did I end up as infomercial material and what does it have to do with you? Let’s start from the beginning.

Four reasons you need to read Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl before it hits theaters

    gone girl
If you haven’t seen the trailer for Gone Girl, click through and scroll down. You’ll have chills down your spine, and not the Grease kind. The movie starring Ben Affleck hits theaters October 3rd, which means you have three weeks to dive into this psychological thrilling novel. It may seem like an endless read when you pick it up, but trust me: you won’t put it down. Sure, going straight to the movie instead of losing 3 days of your life reading non-stop cover to cover seems more efficient, but you will be missing out. But you don’t have to take my word for it…

Why We Should be Proud to Call Ourselves Millennials

    millenials

This June I attended an event featuring a panel of all female millennial entrepreneurs. It was there that  I was first introduced to Asha Dahya, a pint-sized powerhouse Single Girl. Asha is the founder and editor of GirlTalkHQ, a site dedicated to “female empowerment and inspiration for millennial women”. As she told her incredible journey from Australian TV star to blogger and women’s empowerment expert I knew I there was a future collaboration meant for GTHQ and TSD.

I’m honored to say that Asha agreed. Last week she shared with us a post about the struggle she’s faced in finding her identity and the lessons that its taught her, an inspiring read you’ll definitely want to check out!  Today I’m excited to announce that our post is being featured on GirlTalkHQ.

For awhile I’d thought about writing a post about why I’m proud to be one of the millennials. I’ve met amazing people who make up this generation and are improving the world for the better. Yet, the negative anecdotes about millennials still seem to outweigh the positive ones. In defense of our generation, I’d wanted to rework the most common criticisms we receive and share the version that they translate to in my ears.

Head on over to GirlTalkHQ to see what I have to share!

    Superbly Single,

    Jen

Jordan Hamons of The Hungry Traveler Takes an Unexpected Leap from Marketing Maven to Queen of the Kitchen

    The-Hungry-Traveler

“Take the risk and pursue what you love”

The Hungry Traveler has us aching for the finer things in life. Its pages tease us with images of foods we want to feast on in places we want to add to our passports. For those of us with a passion for food and travel, the blog serves as an escape into an idealistic world we wish to inhabit.

Except that to call it idealistic wouldn’t be completely fair because the girl behind the blog, actually does live in this world. An unexpected change of events led Jordan Hamons off the road to a career in marketing onto one toward a career in the kitchen.  Lucky for us, she’s sharing the journey and her advice for other Single Girls feeling the itch to change course.
