Welcome back to What I Love About My City—a series in which our favorite single girls dish on everything from the best places for a single girls weekend to the secret spots only the locals know about. If you’re thinking about moving or just planning your next trip, we’ll fill you in with all the essential details on the cities our crew knows best.

Jacqueline Howard is an editor at Huffington Post and a host of Talk Nerdy to Me who holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Southern California. Originally from Cincinnati, Jacqueline attended the University of Michigan, studied abroad in Melbourne, Australia, and lived in Los Angeles for a few years before heading back to the Midwest. It was as fellow interns at C Magazine that I got to know Jacqueline as one of the smartest and most insightful peers I’ve ever met. We became fast friends when I realized I could talk to her about anything (career choices, reality TV, boys, women’s issues in the media) and get sound advice or an interesting conversation. I still miss her in L.A., but I can’t wait to visit her in her new home.

Happy Hour [ˈhapē ou(ə)r]: noun. A marketing term for a period of time in which a public venue offers discounts on alcoholic drinks.

For me, happy hour is any hour while the sun is setting or has already set during which I consume a leisurely drink with or without pleasant company. I love happy hour as much as Alex Kerkovich loves ribs; if I could, I’d go twice a day. My shortlist covers the vast expanse of Los Angeles… and shows you how far I’m willing to go for a good cocktail. Each of these spots is tried and true, setting the scene for a quick first date drink or a lengthy catch-up with friends. To get you in the mood, I added my picks for the right shade of lip color to go with each hour.

10 Costume Ideas and the BEST Secret for Pulling Them Together

Still asking yourself that elusive question, “What should I be for Halloween?”  Though this annual fright fest doesn’t hit our calendars for another 10 days, for many, the parties kick off this weekend. If you’re scrambling to pull together a costume, you probably have a few criteria in mind: fast, cheap, cute, and easy.
Chances are there a few options you’ve considered and ruled out at this point:
    1. Halloween Stores: They have tons of costumes BUT these always seems overused and overpriced
    2. Goodwill: Cheap but not always the cutest of costumes
    3. DIY: This always seems like a good idea until you start then realize it’s going to take 10x as long as you expected.
No need to worry because we’re letting you in on a little secret we’ve discovered. There are only two places you need to look for all of your costume needs: Forever 21 and American Apparel. Between these two stores you can piece together any costume you dream up and, best of all, it will be fast, cheap, cute and easy!
Here are 5 costume ideas from each store with pieces currently on their racks. The only question left to answer is “trick or treat?”

  • The Single Diaries Brunches With PR Diva Jamie Madrid

    Jamie-Madrid_2013

Jamie Madrid-Mehta moved to L.A. after college (a Journalism and Marketing Communications major) and dove head first into Public Relations. Years later, she took the plunge and started her eponymous firm Jamie Madrid Consulting. Representing the fashion, beauty, accessory, restaurant and lifestyle industries through her array of clients, Jamie has been called a “PR Diva with impeccable taste and truly great connections.” This mid-twenties Midwesterner is the antithesis of generation Y: a self-made go-getter who isn’t afraid of risk or commitment. With the brains to back it up, she’s a recipe for success.

I met Jamie a few years ago through a friend; we had a breakthrough conversation at that friend’s tea during which Jamie first told me about her plans to launch her company, and we have stayed in touch since. One Sunday we met at Sunny Spot, my favorite neighborhood haunt for bottomless brunch libations. In between rounds of mimosas, Jamie reflected on her experience thus far.
