How to Build and Track Your Personal Budget

    budget building 101

Budgeting: we all know it’s important but most of us dread having to do it. Let’s face it, spending money is much easier without having to think about where it’s going or having to acknowledge that we spend that much on happy hours with the girls.

At the same time, spending money without direction can leave us feeling a bit anxious. Have you ever found yourself wondering if you’ll be able to pay the next credit card bill or nervous that the last check you wrote is going to bounce?

Not knowing where out money is going can leave us feeling out of control. When approached with the right attitude, keeping track of your budget can actually be a liberating exercise. When you know you’ve got your expenses covered and have dedicated specific amounts of money to clothes, dinners out, etc., you lose the guilt of spending the money. You’ll even find that your money starts to stretch further because you’re in control of where it’s going.

When I graduated from college my parents gifted me with a financial planning course—a set of books on tape and a workbook to teach me how to spend my new paycheck wisely.  Though not as glamorous as a new car or exotic trip, it was one of the best gifts I received. Taking the self-guided course taught me the fundamentals of creating and tracking a budget. Using the basic principles the course taught, I established a system that worked best for me.

Being able to manage your personal budget is a skill I strongly believe every Single Girl should be equipped with. For that reason, I’m sharing with you my personal budgeting process and budgeting template. If you haven’t already found a system that works for you, give this a try!

  • Sweet [Drinks] Are Made of These

Catherine shares some of her Los Angeles happy hour haunts, from A to Zinque.

Happy Hour [ˈhapē ou(ə)r]: noun. A marketing term for a period of time in which a public venue offers discounts on alcoholic drinks.

For me, happy hour is any hour while the sun is setting or has already set during which I consume a leisurely drink with or without pleasant company. I love happy hour as much as Alex Kerkovich loves ribs; if I could, I’d go twice a day. My shortlist covers the vast expanse of Los Angeles… and shows you how far I’m willing to go for a good cocktail. Each of these spots is tried and true, setting the scene for a quick first date drink or a lengthy catch-up with friends. To get you in the mood, I added my picks for the right shade of lip color to go with each hour.

  • Where to Sell Your Clothes So You Can Reinvest in Your Fall Wardrobe

Add a few dollars to your pocket with our roundup of places—old & new—to sell your old clothes

It’s that time of year again… to forget about your flip flops, tuck away your tank tops, and banish your bikinis to the back of your drawers.  Sweater weather has descended upon us, and our riding boots and blazers are ready to break free from the backs of our closets where they’ve been stowed away (for three seasons if you live in SoCal).
Of all of the seasons, you can’t help but to love fall for its inviting sense of style. Unlike summer’s skimpy attire which bears little concern for body image apprehensions or winter’s over-protective layers, fall fashion strikes the perfect balance. Just like Goldilocks discovering the perfect bowl of porridge, each year we rediscover the perfect balance fall brings—not too hot, not too cold, but just right.
You are probably receiving catalogs and emails from your favorite designers and retailers announcing their fall sales. You might have already been convinced to browse their online stores. Maybe you’ve even moseyed over to the mall to see what bargains you can land. Regardless of what stage you are in, chances are you are prepping for fall’s wardrobe.
Fall shopping is fun, but it also poses a couple of challenges. First, there’s the question of finding space for the new summer wardrobe you invested in just few short months summer ago. Then, there’s the question of figuring out how you’re going to finance the must-have bag, jeans, and jacket you’ve undoubtedly got your eye on.
The Single Diaries is here to help with solutions to clear out your closet and add a few dollars to your pocket. We bet that you have few articles of clothing from last year’s fall wardrobe that have fallen out of style and a handful of items from your summer wardrobe that are too trendy to stay in style for another year. Instead of keeping your closet cluttered with clothes you know you won’t wear, why not turn them into cash you can invest into your new fall wardrobe?
Read on for a roundup of the places we recommend for doing just that.
