Single Girl Reads | Mother’s Day Book Report

A gift guide of books for the mothers on your list

My love of books no doubt stems from my parents. I had my first library card before I started school (my “signature” definitely looks like I had just learned how to write my name). Some of my fondest childhood memories include my mom bringing me to the library and letting me peruse the children’s room for hours. When I started reading more substantial literature, my mom encouraged me to inscribe my name and the date I finished each book on the inside cover. What a charming way to look back years later and consider your “journey” when you first read a novel! Unfortunately, I fell out of this practice once reading for pleasure was a thing of the past (read high school and college required reading lists). I think it’s time to bring it back. Mother’s Day is such a special time to honor the women in your life, and I find there’s no better gift than just the right book. A personalized note is just as extraordinary an inscription… and a beautiful reminder of where the book came from. Here are six of the latest titles to consider for Mother’s Day.

How Moving to L.A. Literally & Figuratively Changed My View on Life

    new view

Single Girls if you caught our post Favorite Sites for Life Advice then you already know I am a huge fan of the ladies over at Quarterlette. These rockin’ women exemplify what it means to us to be a Single Girl and we couldn’t agree more with their site’s mission to “support, guide & inspire women through their quarter-lives.” I’m excited to announce that today’s post is actually featured on Quarterlette as part of their series The Moving Diaries. The series was inspired by the idea that behind every move there is always a story – an end, a new beginning, a challenge, whatever it may be moves always signal change. This was certainly the case for me when I decided to move to Los Angeles in 2011. The story behind my move was the need for a fresh perspective on life. Yes, the official reason I moved was because of a job offer but the real reason, the reason that had truly compelled me to pack my bags reached far deeper. I’d grown tired of my life in my hometown and needed to do something drastic to shake it up.

Head on over to Quarterlette to catch the full article!

    Finding Your Career Passion

Simple Steps to Get into a Job You Love

    career passion

Tomorrow marks the 21st annual Bring Your Daughter (& Son) to Work Day. The program was founded as a way to introduce young girls to the many career opportunities that they could aspire to take on.  By providing exposure to the world the adults lived in, it became a way to get girls to dream big and believe that they could be anything they wanted to be- doctors, lawyers, CEOs you name it!

This yearly American tradition got us to wonder, how many of us end up becoming “what we want to be when we grow up” and how did we ultimately get where we are? Was it by following in the footsteps of our parents? More importantly, if we haven’t yet found our way, how we do get back on track of pursuing our career passion?

Personally, I always wanted to grow up to become a famous actress. I took dance, voice, and acting lessons all in the hopes of growing the talent needed to master this pursuit. What did I ultimately become? A brand manager and marketer. Not exactly the same. While I didn’t follow the career paths of either my mom or dad (nurse and consultant respectively) I did pick up their practicality for a stable and traditional career. What I’ve learned since leaving my job last November is that my desire to become the next Oscar wielding first lady really boils down to a need for a creative outlet. This is where The Single Diaries came into play. By following other bloggers I stumbled upon a new career pursuit and passion.

Your Guide to Planning a Single Girls’ Boozy Brunch

    boozy brunch

Growing up my favorite part about Easter was hands down the all you can eat brunch buffet that was sure to follow the Sunday service.  It was tradition in our family to make our way to a celebratory feast that would break whatever Lenten fast we’d undertaken. It was the greatest meal we’d eat since Christmas and I always anxiously looked forward to it.

Fast forward to 2014 and brunch has been cemented as one of my favorite meals. Our Easter tradition has impressed upon me the notion that brunch is a time to celebrate and indulge in good company and good food. No longer is it reserved for a once a year soiree but instead has taken hold as the fête of choice no matter the celebration.

While the basics of brunch have remained tried and true (eggs, bacon, pancakes, …) there is of course one big difference between the mid-day meals of my youth and my twenties – the booze. If you ask me, no brunch is complete without a steady flow of sparkling cocktails and fruity concoctions.

With one week between us and Easter it’s time to get your own brunch affairs in order. Going out is great but we propose using the occasion as the perfect excuse to host a Single Girls’ boozy brunch of your own. Wondering what it takes to make it memorable? Look no further, we’ve got the tips you need to keep the drinks flowing and the guests happy.
