It Takes Two: Famous Best Friends We Love

A Look at 10 of our Favorite Famous Best Friends & What They’ve Taught Us

Best friends. We love them, we cherish them, and we couldn’t make it through life without them. In honor of the girls we call our besties we’re taking a look at the on-screen dynamic duos who have taught us a thing or two about life, love, and friendship. From TV friends to real-life friends these females remind us why we love our inner circle.

We also love these duos for not portraying women as catty and cutthroat which the media has a sad tendency to do all too often in today’s “reality” driven world. Because really, we know that true friendship is about building each other up not tearing one another down. Whether it’s a phone call in the middle of the night to talk us out of  (or into) quitting or jobs, a bar buddy for happy hour, or a cheerleader to get you through the crazy hard bootcamp you both signed up for, your best friends are the ones who are there to make your life all that much better.

It was tough to narrow down the list but here’s a look at our 10 favorite famous best friends and the lessons they’ve taught us about friendship.

1. DJ and Kimmy

This Full House duo were not only best friends on the show, they also happen to be best friends in real-life. Their on and off-screen bond is a lesson in life long friendship. They’ve shown us how rewarding it can be to keep up the connections that mean the most no matter what life brings your way.

D.J.: Kimmy, we’re going to play a little game okay? Whoever stays quietest the longest gets to lip wrestle with the captain of the football team!
Kimmy: Play ball!

2. Cher and Dionne

What didn’t our favorite Clueless  ladies teach us? Fashion, flirting, and the art of matchmaking. We have them to thank for getting us through our teenage years.

Dion: Cher’s main thrill in life is a makeover, it gives her a sense of control in a world full of chaos.

3. Chrissy, Teeny, Roberta, Sam

A classic movie about growing up, the girls of Now and Then taught us that everyone has their insecurities and that our BFFs will always be there when we need a little pick me up to feel good about ourselves again.

Chrissy: I say we make a pact. Here and now. We’re here for each other, always, no matter what happens in life. If Teeny goes off to Hollywood or I marry a rich doctor, we remember this day and this pact. Whenever we need a friend, we’re here for each other. We can count on it. Always. No matter what.
Sam: It’s a pact.
Chrissy: All for one…
Chrissy, Teeny, Roberta, Sam: And one for all.

4. Rachel and Monica

We have Monica and Rachel to thank for transforming the way we think about sex and the #7. Now we know that if our counting falls short, we’re missing out.

Monica: You got one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven. All right. You could start out with a little one. A two. A one, two, three. A three. A five. A four. A three, two. Two. A two, four, six. Two, four, six. Four. Two. Two. Four, seven! Five, seven! Six, seven! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven! Seven!

5. Lorelai and Rory

Who didn’t want to have Lorelai and Rory’s relationship? The duo showed us that our moms are people too and that they can be our biggest allies, companions in crime, and the best friends we could ever ask for.

Rory: The house is burning and you can save the cake or me. Which do you save?
Lorelai: That’s not fair. The cake doesn’t have legs.

6. Lucy and Ethel

Lucy and Ethel took center stage as the dynamic comedic duo of their time. They taught us that no matter what kind of trouble we may find ourselves in, if we’re in it with our best friend we’re guaranteed to not only get through it but to make it an unforgettably good time.

Lucy: We must know two men who are single and attractive. Two men who are single? Two men? A boy and a dog?
Ethel: Maybe we should settle for Little Boy Blue and Peter Cottontail.

7. Oprah and Gayle

Oprah and Gayle have been real-life best friends since their days working at the same TV studio. Their relationship is constantly under scrutiny yet the two have never let it break their bond. They’ve shown us the power that comes with steadfast loyalty to the ones we love.

Oprah: I understand why people think we’re gay. There isn’t a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it—how can you be this close without it being sexual? How else can you explain a level of intimacy where someone always loves you, always respects you, admires you?
Gayle: Wants the best for you.
Oprah: Wants the best for you in every single situation of your life. Lifts you up. Supports you.Always! That’s an incredibly rare thing between even the closest of friends.

8. Romy and Michele

We love Romy and Michele for their amazing outfits almost as much as their story about inventing Post-Its. These two were never part of the “in” crowd and in doing so taught us to stop trying to be someone we’re not just to fit in. It’s not about fitting in, it’s about finding the friends who totally get you.

famous best friends

Romy: Swear to God, sometimes I wish I was a lesbian.
Michele: Do you want to try to have sex sometime just to see if we are?
Romy: What? Yeah, right
Michelle. Just the idea of having sex with another woman creeps me out. But if we’re not married by the time we’re 30, ask me again.

9. Annie and Lilian

This bride and bridesmaid duo taught us that as much as we’d like to keep our friends all to ourselves we have to let them grow. At some point our friends will move away, get married, and make new friends but that doesn’t mean your friendship can’t be stronger than ever.

Annie: He’s so hot though!
Lillian: Look, I know you say he’s cute, and all that stuff. But he makes you feel like shit, you know? You’re a total catch and any guy would be psyched to be your man. You should just make room for somebody who’s nice to you.

10. Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha

The fierce females of Sex and the City are the perfect example of Leading Ladies. They are fashionable, successful, and supportive of one another in every way. They’ve shown us that  our friendships only get better as the years go by.

Carrie:

The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them, and others you don’t. But, in the end, they’re the people you always come home to. Sometimes it’s the family you’re born into and sometimes it’s the one you make for yourself.
